What a Virtual Power Plant is

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a coordinated fleet of behind-the-meter batteries that a utility, grid operator, or aggregator dispatches during peak-demand hours or grid emergencies. In exchange for making a small portion of stored energy available during these events, participating homeowners and businesses earn enrollment payments, per-event payments, or annual capacity payments, typically several hundred to several thousand dollars per year, depending on program and system size. Solis hybrid inverters paired with a supported battery (including HomeGrid) are VPP-ready out of the box. There is no additional hardware required. Enrollment, telemetry, and dispatch are all handled through the SolisCloud API and our aggregator partner.

How Solis VPP participation works

• Install a Solis hybrid system. A Solis hybrid inverter paired with a compatible battery, commissioned in SolisCloud and connected to the internet.
• Enroll in a program. The system owner enrolls in an available program in their region through the Solis VPP enrollment portal (see enrollment steps per program below).
• Automated dispatch. During peak-demand events or grid emergencies, the system automatically discharges to the grid or reduces onsite load, up to a customer-defined backup reserve.
• Earn incentives. Payments arrive as bill credits, checks, or aggregator disbursements, depending on the program's structure.

Baseline eligibility

To participate in any of the programs below, a customer must:

• Own a Solis hybrid inverter paired with a compatible battery storage system
• Have their system connected to the internet and reporting normally to SolisCloud
• Be a customer of the participating utility in the program's territory
• Be enrolled in the utility's net energy metering (NEM) program, where applicable
• Be enrolled in only one VPP program at a time

Program availability varies by region and utility. Additional program-specific eligibility rules may apply.

Solis VPP partner

Solis participates natively through Derapi, an aggregator-connectivity platform that links the SolisCloud API to utility DERMS platforms. Derapi provides the hosted enrollment portal at solis-vpp.derapi.com and handles telemetry, event orchestration, and dispatch on our behalf.

Solis's cloud API has also been integrated by additional aggregators including EnergyHub, Virtual Peaker, and Uplight, which enables Solis to be listed as an approved manufacturer in programs those aggregators administer.

California: Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP)

• Region / utility: California: PG&E, SCE, SDG&E service territories
• Aggregator / enrollment path: Derapi (Solis is a VPP aggregator participant under ELRP Sub-Group A.4)
• Incentive: $2.00 per kWh of credited load reduction, paid by the utility to the aggregator and passed to the customer
• Season: May 1 – October 31
• Event window: 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., any day of the week; 1–3 hour events for VPP aggregators (Sub-Group A.4)
• Annual dispatch cap: Up to 60 hours per year
• Program description: ELRP was established by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and is operated by the state's investor-owned utilities. It pays electricity consumers for reducing consumption or increasing electricity supply during periods of grid emergency.
• Stacking restriction: ELRP A.4 participants cannot be simultaneously enrolled in Rule 32 programs or Power Saver Rewards. Confirm the customer's current program enrollments before applying to avoid a disenrollment surprise.

Note: DSGS is no longer accepting new participants and has been removed from this list. ELRP is the current California enrollment path for Solis customers.

Connecticut: Energy Storage Solutions (CT-ESS)

• Region / utility: Connecticut: Eversource and United Illuminating territories
• Administrator: Connecticut Green Bank, overseen by PURA
• Aggregator / enrollment path: Derapi
• Program structure (effective April 1, 2026): A smaller upfront enrollment incentive plus 10-year performance payments tied to Active Dispatch participation. The prior $212.50/kWh upfront + $225/kW-year structure is retired for new enrollees.

Higher residential performance rates apply to underserved and low- to moderate-income customers. Grid-edge status is defined as the top 10% of circuits by outage frequency or duration since July 1, 2012; maps are on the program website.

• Dispatch: Active Dispatch events only for new enrollees. Summer: 30–60 events per season. Winter: up to 10 events per year.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut: ConnectedSolutions

• Region: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut (utility coverage confirmed with Derapi on an installation-by-installation basis)
• Aggregator / enrollment path: Derapi (EnergyHub administers the program on the utility side)
• Summer incentive: $275/kW-year based on average battery performance during summer dispatch events. National Grid reports customers earn approximately $1,200/year on average. The per-kW rate is locked for the first five summers of enrollment.
• Season: June 1 – September 30
• Event window: 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., up to 60 events per summer, maximum 3 hours per event
• Winter component: Some territories call a limited winter event set. National Grid will not call a winter event when extreme weather is forecast, allowing customers to hold a full charge for potential outages.

Solis hybrid inverters are engineered for grid-interactive operation and VPP-ready out of the box:

• Grid-interactive hybrid inverter technology with dispatch-capable firmware
• Battery dispatch optimization through the SolisCloud API, integrated with Derapi and additional aggregator platforms (EnergyHub, Virtual Peaker, Uplight)
• Customer-controlled backup reserve: The homeowner sets a reserve state-of-charge so the battery never fully discharges during a VPP event, preserving backup capacity for outages
• Real-time monitoring of enrollment status, event participation, and system contribution through the enrolled partner's portal
• Per-site revocable authorization: Customers grant and can withdraw enrollment consent at the site level rather than through a shared account
