External Energy Meter - Eastron SDM630: Ordering, Installation, and CSA/UL Certifications

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Every single Solis S6-EH3P60K03-NV-YD-H-US inverter comes standard with the compatible Eastron SDM630 energy meter included directly within the main inverter packaging (box/carton). This meter does not need to be ordered or purchased separately unless larger Rogowski coils are required. Each included meter kit comes standard with three 600A-rated Rogowski coils (flexible CTs), rather than traditional rigid split-core CTs.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: The only energy meter compatible with the Solis S6-EH3P60K03-NV-YD-H-US hybrid inverter is the Eastron SDM630. While similar variations of this meter can be found for sale across various online retailers, those third-party models are not compatible with this inverter. The specific, compatible version of the Eastron SDM630 energy meter must be purchased exclusively through a Solis-authorized distributor. It is not possible to substitute a different brand or model of meter (such as WattNode, etc.), as their protocols have not been mapped and they will fail to communicate with the Solis hybrid system.

This strict requirement is because the official meter kit arrives from the Solis factory pre-programmed with the exact settings required to integrate seamlessly with the inverter. These internal configurations are typically locked and cannot be altered in the field. Consequently, the kit must be sourced from an authorized Solis distributor. Furthermore, Solis fully warranties these specific meters and will provide servicing or replacement in the event of a failure.

When the External Meter is Required

Note: CTs can be connected directly to the inverter without the Eastron meter unless one of the following three conditions are encountered during the system design:

  1. Extended distance to the utility POCC: The CT wires included with the inverter are approximately 16 feet long and absolutely cannot be spliced or extended. If the distance between the inverter and the measurement point exceeds 16 feet, the Eastron SDM630 meter must be installed. The meter communicates with the inverter via an RS485 connection, which can safely run up to 300 feet. In short, because the CT wires cannot be lengthened, installing the local meter is the required solution.

  2. High maximum system current: The factory-included CTs are rated for a maximum of 600A. If the site's maximum system current exceeds this rating, an upgraded meter kit is mandatory. The standard external kit includes 600A-rated Rogowski coils, while a few secondary kit options feature 1000A-rated Rogowski coils for higher capacity loads.

  3. Large conductor sizing and space constraints: Standard rigid split-core CTs often will not fit around oversized or bundled current-carrying conductors connecting the utility to the system. In these situations, flexible CTs (Rogowski coils) are necessary. The secondary meter kit accommodates this by including flexible Rogowski coils rated for 1000A.

Do not attempt to purchase this meter from any merchant that is not a Solis-authorized distributor, it will not work with the Solis inverter.

Meter Manual and Installation Steps

The attached manual explains how to install this meter with the inverter. Please download it and review it.

The CTs will connect to the Eastron meter instead of to the inverter. The meter will need one hot wire and neutral wire for power. You will need to connect the meter to a three-pole breaker as well for grid-reference voltage measurements.. Connect the meter to the inverter with a standard ethernet cable as the meter and inverter both have RJ45 (ethernet) ports. If you are making a cable, use pins 4 (RS485A) and 5 (RS485B) on both ends. It is recommended to use a factory-made cable since handmade cables can be made improperly. Be sure to use an ethernet cable tester if you are making your own cable. The “Meter” RJ45 port of the inverter must be used. Do not use the two “Meter” pins, these are not meant for the external energy meter.

Meter UL and CSA Certifications

Please download the attached CSA/UL Certification document. When installed with the Solis S6-EH3P(30-60)K-NV-YD-H-US commercial hybrid inverter series, the external energy meter is evaluated to meet rigorous North American safety standards. Specifically, the Eastron SDM630MCT has been tested and certified by Intertek (cETLus) for compliance with the following standards:

  • UL 61010-1 (Ed. 3, Rev. April 29, 2016): This is the primary standard for safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use.

  • CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1-12 (Ed. 3): The Canadian equivalent standard for safety in measurement and control equipment.

  • UL 61010-2-030 (Ed. 1, Rev. Sept. 16, 2016): This standard specifically covers safety requirements for testing and measuring circuits.

  • CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 61010-2-030 (Ed. 1, 2012 / R2016): The Canadian standard for testing and measuring circuits.

How to Present This to Your AHJ

If an inspector requests proof of listing, please include the Intertek Authorization to Mark (Control Number: 5015282) —which is provided in the appendix of this guide—in your permit submittal package. When referencing this document, note the following to expedite your approval:

  • Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) Certification: The meter is certified by Intertek Testing Services, an OSHA-recognized NRTL, and bears the cETLus Listed mark. This confirms it meets both US and Canadian safety standards.

  • System Component Installation: The Authorization to Mark identifies the unit as a "DIN Rail Energy Meter". As such, it is designed to be installed as a sub-component within a suitable electrical enclosure (such as a dedicated meter box or distribution panel) where the final field wiring and connections are evaluated by the AHJ.

  • CT/Coil Integration: The listed models, including the SDM630MCT series, are designed to receive signals from external current transformers (CTs) and flexible Rogowski coils. The compatibility, physical routing, and insulation of these external measurement conductors should be evaluated as part of the final system installation.

  • Verification: You can verify the active status of this certification at any time by searching the online Intertek Directory of Listed Products using the provided Control Number (5015282or the manufacturer name (Zhejiang Eastron Electronic Co., Ltd.).
