Mechanical vs Compression Lugs - Guidelines for connections

This memo outlines the protocols for electrical connections to ensure the safety, reliability, and optimal performance of our systems. Adherence to these guidelines is crucial for maintaining the quality of our work.


1. Priority: Compression Lugs

  • Mandatory Use of Compression Lugs: When connecting to inverters, only compression lugs are authorized. These lugs create a strong, permanent connection that enhances the performance and longevity of our inverters.
  • Benefits of Compression Lugs: Compression lugs are essential for reliable electrical connections, reducing the risk of overheating and connection failures.

2. Wire Ferrules for Cable Connections

  • Use of Wire Ferrules: Wire ferrules must be used on all cable connections when mechanical terminations are required. This ensures a secure and reliable connection. 

  • Fine Print on Mechanical Lugs: Mechanical lugs may only be used with wire ferrules and are not preferred. Their use can introduce risks of ampacity removal and the potential for hot spots.                                                                 *This is only authorized if approved by Solis Engineering Team on a case by case*

    NOTE: We will not authorize RMA's if Mechanical Lugs were used. The installation is considered Out-Of-Warranty due to not following manufacturer's guidelines per the Installation Manual.


3. Importance of Proper Connections

  • Ampacity Removal: Improper connections can lead to a reduction in current-carrying capacity, resulting in voltage drops and inefficiencies in our systems.
  • Prevention of Hot Spots: Bad connections are a significant safety hazard, creating hot spots that may lead to electrical fires. Maintaining proper connections is critical for safe and efficient operation.
